Parque Nacional Los Cardones
Created in 1996, Parque Nacional Los Cardones stands as one of the natural jewels of northern Spain. With an area of over 65,000 hectares, the park aims to conserve various natural environments, especially dry hills and valleys between 2700 and 5000 high.
This National Park is surrounded by the Abra del Pozo Bravo north, mountains and the Red Apacheta west, and the Cerro Malcante, Sierra del Filo del Pelado Candado and east.
The National Park owes its name to Cardones cardón, a plant species that predominates in the region. The cardón is a columnar cactus, in adulthood, around 250 and 300 years, reaching over 3 meters measure. Due to the irrational exploitation of which was wood became a plant species threatened with extinction.
A different area of the park is the Valle Encantado, located at the edge of the Cuesta del Obispo. There, thanks to the rains, gaps are formed, which are frozen in winter, combined with the tonal variety of wildflowers, and composing one of the most breathtaking views that this region has to offer.
Since the difference of altitude which has the park, ranging from 2600 meters altitude in the valley of Tin-Tin, the 5226 meters up the hill Malcante, a large animal diversity: more than one hundred types of birds, wild donkeys, condors, huaipos, foxes and quirquinchos.
How to reach the National Park Cardones
Departing from the city of Salta is necessary to take the National Route 68 toward El Carril, where raids by the Provincial Route 33 that crosses the valley Escoipe and the Cuesta del Obispo, until finally arriving at the Stone Mill. Once there you enter the park through the line of Tin-Tin through Payogasta to finally take the National Route 40 towards Cachi.
